Robe Has Busy PALME Middle East show

Robe enjoyed a busy PALME Middle East exhibition staged over three days at the Dubai International...

The event was co-ordinated for Robe by Middle East Regional Sales Manager Elie Battah, who was joined on the booth by Elie Ghanem, Technical Support Manager for the Middle East, plus Robe’s Sales Director Harry von den Stemmen, and Sales Assistant Eva Jurenkova.
Robe showcased all its latest innovations including the ROBIN MMX and DLX Spots, the amazing LEDWash 600 and 1200 fixtures, the sensational new LEDBeam 100 and the ROBIN 600 Spot, Wash and Beam series. Also prominent were CitySkape 48s and Xtremes and the City Source 96 LED wash lights.
There was massive interest in all the products. In fact, Elie reckons that it’s the “Best” PALME ME show he has ever experienced, especially the first day, when the booth was literally swamped with visitors from all over the region throughout the entire day.
Products attracting the most attention were the tiny and hugely powerful LEDBeam 100 which everyone loved for its fast movement and incredible ‘cuteness’, and the MMX Spot, which was extremely popular due to its light weight, intensity and great range of features.
The visitor quality was generally very good and included serious players from rental companies, installers and systems integrators as well as designers and technicians, all keen to check out the good things they have heard about the latest Robe technology.
Says Elie, “PALME Middle East is a strategically important show that really brings us closer to our customers from across the region, not just the UAE It was a great opportunity to present all the new products launched at Frankfurt”.
He adds that they had substantial interest from new contacts and people who had not looked at Robe before, but have now picked up on the incredible buzz going around about the current ROBIN product range.
It was the first PALME ME show where deals have been closed on the stand, and people were coming to them with definite orders, knowing exactly what they wanted, rather than just having a browse.
Hopefully this is a good and positive sign for the coming 12 months.

Multi-Media Chooses Robe

Johannesburg and Cape Town based rental and production company Multi-Media has recently invested in...

The company is run by Tim Fish and specialises in concept design, production and rental primarily in the corporate sector. Tim has been in the industry since he was 13, starting out as a DJ, and the company was founded in 1991 in Cape Town.
The purchase of the latest Robe’s follows hot on the heels of Multi-Media’s first Robe investment - in Robe 12 ROBIN 300 LEDWashes - two months earlier.
Keen to be able to offer clients the latest technologies, they wanted high output fixtures representing good value for money, and decided to go with Robe after serious consideration and many comparisons.
They liked the size and punch of the LEDWash 600s explains Tim, “We save on power at the event and space in the truck”. He thinks the 600 Spots are “Very fast and bright compared to competitor products”. The MMXs were purchased for their effects and potential as creative design tools.
The Robes were all supplied by South African distributor DWR. “We are extremely happy with our decision,” declares Tim.
He adds that the lower power consumption and generally more sustainable ROBIN series will fit perfectly into the increasing trend for events trying to be greener and more eco-friendly. Their local event association has established a ‘Green Forum’ and he reckons that most rental companies are gradually moving towards more carbon-conscious solutions and choices in the provision of lighting and visuals.
Multi-Media’s Robes have already been in action on a number of shows including the Engen Retail Indaba at Sun City Superbowl (LD’s Kurt du Preez and Robert Grobler) and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year SA Growth forum in the Westin Hotel Cape Town where Tim was LD. Upcomings include an event for retail giant Pick ‘n’ Pay in Zambia.

Over 300 Robe LEDWashes for BMW at Geneva Motor Show

Over 300 Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWash and PureWhite moving lights were specified by lighting designer...

The high profile event was staged at the Palexpo Centre in Geneva, and BMW’s special launch concept was originated by Mutabor Design GmbH from Hamburg, Germany.
A steel superstructure was designed in collaboration with architects Puchner & Schum from Munich, together with engineers Structure GmbH from Frankfurt.
This was then clad with fibre glass to create two curved three dimensional latticed set piece walls surrounding the two Gran Coupe vehicles, one of which was on a revolve. There was a circular ceiling above the area with three rings of trussing for lighting positions, and at the back of the presentation space was a circular hi res LED video screen.
For the duration of the show, the car’s promotional video was looped and shown on the screen, accompanied by a stylish and very harmonious lightshow that integrated the cars within the set, so choosing the right luminaire was absolutely crucial to Heilig’s lighting design.
Previous to this event, he had not used Robe products, and before making his decision, he conducted several shootouts. He was looking for a luminaire with a good quality of light, a flat and even beam field, smooth colour mixing and a good zoom range.
After the first couple of shootouts it fast became apparent that the only LED wash fixture meeting all his criteria was the Robe ROBIN 600 LEDWash and the ROBIN 600 PureWhite SW (the smart-white version of the luminaire). “It is the ideal tool” he says, “The colour mixing is perfect and the zoom range (15 – 60 degrees) exceptional”.
The order was placed with Robe by the lighting rental contractors for the BMW stand, Rockservice from Salzgitter, Germany, and the sale delivered through Robe’s German distributor, LMP.
Robe pulled all the stops out to deliver the LEDWashes in a short lead-time, and made a special order for the 42 SmartWhites as Cree normally produces this LED multi-chip only in the US. Ninety-four of the 311 units used for the installation were supplied in white housings.
A hundred and twenty LEDWash 600s were ensconced in the narrow corridors behind the latticed set walls either side of the Gran Coupe arena – both on the floor and in the air, and they very effectively lit a cyc wall behind, as well as the set itself. The rest of the fixtures were rigged on the three circular trusses in the ceiling.
Heilig had to create three different lightshows for the overall event – one for the BMW Group Conference, one for the DTM (racing series) press conference, plus the one for the on-going show presentation.
To meet the schedule, detailed 3D visualised pre-programming was undertaken off-site and then fine-tuned when at Palexpo by programmer / operator Jan Kirchhoff, using a grandMA2 full size console.
Ingo Dombrowski, Robe’s Key Account Manager for Europe comments, “Peter Heilig clearly designed the absolute highlight for showcasing a new product at this year's Geneva Motor Show. There was no other presentation as impressive as this in the entire show! Respect!”

Robe Announces New Mexican Distributor

Robe lighting has a new Mexican distributor – Mexico City based Vari Internacional – a high...

The announcement was made during the recent 2012 Soundcheck Expo trade show also in Mexico City, at a special launch party staged at the fabulous Polyforum Siqueiros, part of the World Trade Center complex. The venue is a creative / social facility and art gallery showcasing the work of famous Mexican artist, muralist and political activist, David Siqueiros.
Says Robe’s Latin American Regional Sales Manager, Guillermo Traverso, “We planned the Robe party and the announcement very carefully as we wanted to make a huge impact with it and the news of the partnership!”
There was no doubt that the event had the right effect!
Traverso is an enthusiastic art lover and a big fan of the now legendary Siqueiros – who’s colourful life included fighting in the Spanish Civil War and several spells in prison in addition to authoring some of the most stunning social realist art in the world.
It took a massive effort to hire out the Polyforum Siqueiros - one of Mexico’s great cultural landmarks - for the Robe event, but it also gave everyone attending a chance to appreciate some amazing works while they relaxed, socialised and enjoyed Robe’s tradition for hospitality – Latino style!
The band Pop Delivery played live and over 200 guests attended, as the event became the talk of the 2012 Soundcheck Expo’s ‘after-shows’.
The exhibition itself saw exceptionally brisk business at the massive Vari Internacional booth, which featured all Robe’s latest ROBIN series products.
Vari Internacional has great respect and expertise in all sectors of the industry, particularly in rental & staging, television and theatre. It has some serious premium brands onboard including L-Acoustics and Avid, and this was another aspect initially attracting both companies together, especially with Vari Internacional’s ‘family’ orientated business model, which fits in with Robe perfectly.
Vari Internacional’s CEO Hugo Patiño Cuellar states, “Robe shares our philosophy of offering great products and service, with immediate response and the best technical support and back up at all times. We perceive Robe’s product development to be one step ahead of all the competition, constantly innovating and looking ahead of new trends – and that’s where we want to be”.
Vari Internacional has a large showroom at their premises which will feature the full Robe range, and their technical and sales teams have already visited the Czech Republic to receive product training.
The Mexican entertainment technology market is among the most important in Latin America. It has been steadily growing in the last two years, and Robe has plenty of short and long term strategic expectations.
Robe’s Sales Director Harry von den Stemmen comments, “Vari Internacional’s business commitment to supplying only the best quality brands impressed us, and we’re positive that it will be a highly successful partnership”.
There were immediate results at the 2012 Soundcheck Expo, with over 100 Robe fixtures sold directly off the booth.
The most popular product at the moment is the LEDWash 600, however the larger LEDWash 1200 and the new super-small-super-bright LEDBeam 100 are also expected to be big sellers.

Robe Looks To The Future

Over 300 Robe moving lights Rocked the House at the 2012 Future Music Festival (FMF) – Australia’s...

Andy Mutton created an overall production and visual design for the event. The equipment was provided by Clifton productions, whose Mick Parsons was lighting production manager.
Twelve hours of non-stop, pumping, pulsating dance and electronic music radiated from eight stages!
The Las Venus (Main) stage offered a hugely dynamic lighting rig, fully featured with Robe moving lights including ColorSpot and Wash 2500E ATs, ColorWash 1200 and 700E ATs and ColorBeam 700s.
With incendiary performances from The Swedish House Mafia, Skrillex, Jessie J, Fatboy Slim, Tinie Tempah and numerous others, visiting LDs had plenty of choice and flexibility with the rig.
These designers included Ian Tomlinson (Swedish House Mafia), Stephen Abbiss (Fatboy Slim), Andy Hurst (Tinie Tempah) and Neil Carson (Chase & Status) – all based in the UK!
The Mazda 2 Flamingo Stage line-up included over 70 Robe moving lights, complete with amazing performances from the likes of Professor Green, The Wombats, Gym Class Heroes, New Order, The Naked & Famous, et. al. – all making plenty of noise for the packed and hugely enthusiastic audiences.
Electronic dance music guru Paul van Dyk took the Evolution Stage by storm with his exhilarating, full-tilt set, lit with over 100 Robe fixtures including 30 ROBIN 600 LEDWashes.
The 2012 Future Music Festival tour visited five Australian cities – Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide - and is considered by many to be the best and most memorable to date.
It was followed up shortly afterwards by the first FMF to be held outside Australia – staged in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Robe Rocks The House in Slovenia with DJ Chuckie

When the Playboy White Invasion dance event hit Ljubljana’s Gospodarsko Razstavisce, 6000 dance...

This was supplied by locally based rental company Intralite and designed by their Primoz Kosir.
Kosir wanted to create a dynamic atmosphere lighting to match the vibe and pumping vibrancy of the music, he needed to produce plenty of variety and scope for ‘rocking the house’ in every shape and form of the expression!
Trussing was installed over the main stage which featured the DJ booth and all performers, with more over the audience, providing lighting positions for zapping beams and effects around the room and immersing the audience in the action.
The Robe moving lights consisted of 16 ROBIN 600 Beams,12 ColorSpot 1200E ATs, 16 ColorWash 575 AT zooms, eight ColorSpot 575 ATs and eight ColorWash 575 ATs.
The Robe luminaires were proposed along with the design to the show’s promoter, who was well impressed – specially after the event and hearing so much good feedback about the presentation..
Kosir placed the ROBIN 600 Beams and some ColorWashes on the main stage, with 12 of the 600 Beams rigged to vertical trusses behind the DJ booth. The rest of the fixtures were scattered around on the different audience trusses.
The ROBIN 600 Beams were used to achieve long tight ‘sword’ like beams of light which penetrated right down the other end of the venue and really got the crowds energised.
The ColorWashes were used generally to wash the stage and whiz around the audience and the venue, while the ColorSpots added some spectacular aerial effects which complimented those of the super-bright 600 Beams.
The lightshow was also operated for the event by Kosir using an Avolites Pearl Expert and a Touch Wing, running Titan software.
He really likes the gobo sets of the ColorWash 1200s – which are still going strong after many years of active service for the company. He uses them on their corporate work a lot as well as for the music shows and festivals.
He thinks the small streamlined aesthetics of the ROBIN 600 Beam and its massive output are “Fantastic”.
Intralite – owned by Ales Pirman – is one of the leading Slovenian lighting rental players, and has been a keen Robe user for many years.
They favour the brand for it being well made, well priced and reliable for rental staging applications and touring, with lots of creative features. They also enjoy stellar service and support from Robe’s Slovenian distributors, MK Light Sound.

Full Points for Robe in Estonian Eurovision Selection

An impressive rig of 70 Robe moving lights designed by Rene Jõhve and Meelis Lusmägi of Cuu Club...

The event was staged in the Nokia Concert Hall in Estonian capital Tallinn. Presented by high profile comedians Tiit Sukk and Taavi Teplenkov, it was broadcast live nationwide on the Estonian public broadcasting channel ETV1 and also enjoyed by a live audience of 1800 who saw the 20 finalists battle it out.
It was Jõhve and Meelis’s first time designing lighting and set for the event, winning the project after presenting imaginative and fresh ideas.
Using previous Eesti Laul competitions as their creative starting point, they took all the classic requirements of the TV show / competition, and combined these with a set of new and different visual concepts for 2012.
The Robe fixture count was 20 x ROBIN 300 Spots, 22 x ROBIN 600 LEDWashes, 12 x ROBIN 300 LEDWashes, 12 x ColorSpot 1200E ATs and three ColorWash 1200E ATs – all specified by Jõhve, who is a firm fan of the brand. The units were supplied by a combination of Cuu Club and E&T.
“We have used Robe fixtures for a long time, and found them to be reliable and innovative”, confirms the designer who has been integrating Robe into his work since 2005.
The trusses were arranged in an arc around and above the stage, for an overall theatrical look which also worked ideally for the TV.
The ROBIN 300 and 600 LEDWashes and the ROBIN 600 Spots were on the rear overhead trusses, used for multiple effects and strong colour-rich backlight looks on camera, while the ColorSpot and Washes were rigged on the venue’s fly bars, used for artist contra-light and front lighting.
Each competitor had their own distinctive lightshow, a task relatively easy to achieve with all the Robes up above, but that required some intense programming to perfect in a short timeframe.
Jõhve likes many features prominent on the Robes, in particular, the fast iris, the smooth colour mixing and the individual pixel rings on the LEDWashes which are versatile and interesting, always looking good on camera as well as to the eye. He comments that the colours and the way the units handle is “Beautiful”.
Rene Jõhve programmed and operated the show himself, using an Avolites Pearl Expert console.
Singer Ott Lepland took the top slot in a very close contest with his ballad “Kuula” (Listen), which was judged by a combination of the jury and public tele-voting. He will now represent Estonia in the Eurovision second semi-final at Baku, Azerbaijan, in May.

Robe for Gatecrasher in Johannesburg

Superclub Gatecrasher’s Global Soundsystem world tour hit Johannesburg, South Africa in style where...

Robe ROBIN 300E Wash, ColorWash 250E AT and Scan 575 moving lights were prominent on the rig designed by Gert Smith from XGX Productions, the company contracted to supply the full technical package for the event.
Gert and XGX were recommended to Gatecrasher promoters Lovetech following their previous work providing lighting, audio and AV solutions for top dance events.
The creative brief for the lighting was to combine contemporary LED lightsources with old skool rave techniques, using very fast movement, bright colours and lots of gobo looks and beamwork to rock the house.
The lighting kit was rigged on to a 10 x 7 metre Eurotruss roof structure installed in the club’s outdoor space for the event, with the ROBIN 300s positioned along the top of a 4 x 3 metre LED screen behind the DJ booth.
The ROBIN 300E Washes are a new investment for XGX, purchased from Robe’s South African distributor, DWR. So far they have been extremely well received, “They worked perfectly as a colour wash and also provided some great eye-candy for the massive crowd,” says Gert.
The Scan 575 XTs were alternated with the ROBIN 300E Washes along the top of the LED screen frame, and the ColorWash 250E ATs were placed on the stage deck and the DJ booth, used for skimming thick, flat slices of light over the crowd.
All lighting – which included other moving lights, generics and LED sources - was programmed onto an Avolites Tiger Touch console which was operated by Gert for the show.
The event was a massive success, and both the promoters and Gatecrasher were delighted with the production values and results brought to the party by XGX.
XGX Productions first invested in the Robe brand in 2005, when they were the first touring production company in South Africa to do so.

Robe Appoints New Argentinian distributor

Robe announces a new exclusive Argentinian distributor - Buenos Aires based The TSD Group.

The company is run by Daniel Lema, and it has been a major player in the professional entertainment technology industry since 1994 as a leading supplier to all sectors including television, theatres and concert touring.
“We are delighted to have TSD onboard as part of the Robe family,” says Robe’s Regional Sales Manager for Latin America, Guillermo Traverso. “We took our time to find the right company and people,” he adds, “and the TSD Group’s expertise and commitment to the brand, plus their renowned after-sales service and support are all qualities that fit perfectly with us. We expect that they will be great success”.
TSD has been aware of Robe for some years and has always been impressed with the brand, its product lines and their performance. Many things came together to make the deal happen, including an upturn in the Argentinian economy.
The TSD Group was keen to become a distributor because of Robe’s reliability, quality and cost-effectiveness.
TSD Sales Manager Sandra Gallasso comments, “We have wanted to work with Robe for some time, and now all the circumstances are right! We are expecting to do particularly well with Robe in the touring market, especially with a rapidly increasing amount of international artists now visiting Argentina”.
She adds, that the TSD Group feels it is “Absolutely the right company” to introduce ROBE across all of Argentina and to make the brand accessible via their massive network of contacts, customers and industry friends.
The current flagship ROBIN MMX Spot and ROBIN 600 LEDWash have already been very well received.

Phlippo Showlights Makes Massive Robe LEDWash 600 investment

Leading Belgian lighting and visuals rental company, Phlippo Showlights has invested heavily in...

The company, based in a large facility in Lier, Antwerp, has been at the cutting edge of the show and entertainment technology business for over 40 years. It is headed by Tom Phlippo who is Operations Director, and Financial Manager Marc Hanze.
Phlippo supplies lighting and visuals equipment and crew to all sectors – concert touring, live shows, television and theatre productions, conferences and corporate presentations, special events, festivals and parties.
Television is a particularly strong sector at the moment, and current work includes as lighting supplier to the Voice van Vlaanderen (Flanders) and Voice of Belgique TV shows, recorded (respectively) at Alfacam Studios in Lint and in Liege, both with lights designed by Ignace D’Haeze of design practice Arf & Yes. Phlippo is also supplying the current European touring production of the blockbuster Holiday on Ice show, with lighting designed by Luc Peumans from Painting With Light. Both of these shows feature the new Robe LEDWash 600s.
The first Robe purchase was made in August 2011 via the Belgian office of Robe’s Benelux Distributor, Controllux. It was co-ordinated by Bram de Clerck, who says, “Phlippo are one of the most important rental companies in the country, and when LEDWash 600 became available it was absolutely the right product to add to their inventory”.
The first batch of 62 fixtures went straight out on the Holiday On Ice tour.
Two months later came the next order for 44 fixtures, and this was followed by the latest one in January 2012 for another 62, which went straight out on the Voice of Flanders/Belgique. The sets for both these weekly shows (in Flemish and French languages) are identical and designed by Arf & Yes. Each features 52 LEDWash 600s on the lighting rig.
Tom Phlippo comments, “In the LEDWash 600, Robe brought a superior quality LED wash light to the market that was exactly what many of our shows needed and what our lighting designer clients were specifying”.
The reasons everyone likes Robe’s LEDWash range are the high brightness of the output, the homogenised light engine – which outputs an incredibly smooth and even beam – and the range of real whites. It was among the first LEDWash fixtures available that addressed all the issues of the first generation of LED lightsources in this context.
Tom adds that the LEDWash 600 is also a very cost effective unit. Apart from the long life of the LEDs – 60,000 hours as opposed to around 750 hours for an average discharge lamp – it is a lightsource that gives the company an excellent rate of return.
The power saving and light weight means that more fixtures can be transported in less truck space and run on less electricity – all important for a rental company working in a diverse selection of shows and events like Phlippo. It also means they can potentially offer their small-to-medium projects more fixtures and therefore more creative options.
The LEDWash 600s have also proved extremely reliable – and ever since the first purchase, even with the steady increase of numbers, they have all been out of the warehouse all of the time!
